Welcome to the Roundhouse

Roundhouse Birmingham is an independent charity, and a pioneering partnership between the Canal & River Trust and the National Trust to bring an important Birmingham landmark back to life through an innovative blend of heritage and lettings.

A smiley welcome to National Trust Members

Thank you for visiting the Roundhouse Birmingham website, and showing interest in visiting our building.

What we do

Roundhouse Birmingham is an independent charity, delivering a range of bookable tours and activities which explore Birmingham on foot, by bike, and on water from our home: the grade II* listed Roundhouse.

What’s here for you

When you visit the Roundhouse, we will welcome you in our small Visitor Centre and Display Space. Take a look at the Things to Do page for bookable tours – we recommend making sure you see what’s on, and even booking, ahead of your visit to avoid disappointment. National Trust members receive a discount on tours.

We don’t have an on-site café/restaurant for the foreseeable future. If you’re visiting us and would like to find somewhere to eat or drink, The Distillery is open from 12pm every day and is just next door. We also have picnic benches available at the Roundhouse and you’re also very welcome to bring your own food.

What else is here

Most of the building is home to private office space for the National Trust, Canal & River Trust, and Sustrans. Income from these tenanted areas goes towards ensuring the sustainable future of the grade II* listed Roundhouse. For more information on the private office tenants, please see the Who’s Here page.

Update

The ‘Roundhouse Birmingham’ charity was set up in 2016 to care for the historic Grade II* listed Roundhouse building. Nine years on and the restored building is now used as office space and is home to a much-loved Italian restaurant.

Since 2021, the Roundhouse has also been a base for guided walks, kayak tours, boat trips and other activities. Whilst these have been well received, rising external costs mean this element of Roundhouse Birmingham is no longer providing the sustainable income we need to fund the ongoing care of this historic building. For this reason, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the leisure activity offer and visitor centre.

The office spaces will remain open as usual. Visitors can still access the site (see www.arenaltd.co.uk for opening hours) and Ristorante Caffe Arena will continue to welcome visitors.

We’re hugely proud of what the Roundhouse Birmingham team has achieved, and we’d also like to thank all of our visitors for their support. The trustees of Roundhouse Birmingham remain fully committed to caring for this important part of Birmingham’s heritage.

If you’ve already booked a tour, you’ll be contacted via email and the cost of your booking will be refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience.
