Awards & Recognition

Roundhouse Birmingham are proud of the work undertaken to bring new purpose to our building, and to deliver an activity programme that advocates for our city. Read on to see how we've been recognised.

2023 | West Midlands Tourism Awards

Winner: ‘New Tourism Business of the Year’

We’re delighted to have been named New Tourism Business of the Year by judges from West Midlands Tourism, which recognises new tourism businesses in the region. We were really pleased to have received recognition for our people-first approach – “the judges were impressed by the care and thought gone into the people who they engage with, including their customers, volunteers, and partners”.

2022 | LABC Building Excellence Awards

Regional Winner: ‘Best public or community building – 2022’

In 2022, Roundhouse Birmingham won the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Award for Best Public or Community Building in the West Midlands region.

2022 | West Midlands Tourism Awards

Winner: ‘Experience of the Year’

In March 2022, our kayak tours were crowned ‘Experience of the Year’ at the West Midlands Tourism Awards supported by the West Midlands Growth Company. Staff members and volunteers enjoyed a great evening at the awards event celebrating the win for our Bustling Birmingham Kayak Tour.

Huge thanks to our volunteers; their hard work and dedication is what makes our kayak tours so memorable. Thank you also to all of the visitors who joined us for a fantastic year in 2021.

2021 | Museum and Heritage Awards

Shortlisted: ‘Partnership of the Year’

We were shortlisted for this Museum and Heritage Award for our partnership with We Don’t Settle for three projects working with young people of colour: Birmingham by Night, an exhibition which examines the history of night workers in Birmingham; Herstory of Birmingham, a zine focussing on under-represented local histories; and My Voice, My Path, Our History, a project exploring local black heritage and spaces.

You can find out more about these projects below.

2021 | Birmingham Civic Society Awards

Shortlisted: ‘Renaissance Award’

We’re thrilled that our project to bring new life to the Roundhouse has been recognised by Birmingham Civic Society.

Their Renaissance Award recognises the most successful conservation projects completed in the city, be it the restoration of a building, public space, or structure. The award appreciates and values a variety of projects, whether that be a swimming baths, a restaurant or museum.

2021 | Westside Excellence Awards

Winner: ‘Excellence in Heritage and Arts’

In 2021, Westside BID celebrated the achievements of some of their valued members through a newly formed Westside Excellence Awards. Roundhouse Birmingham were honoured to be recognised for our excellent work in history and heritage.

Because of the pandemic, the awards were held virtually – you can see us receiving our award below at 10:10 mins.

Update

The ‘Roundhouse Birmingham’ charity was set up in 2016 to care for the historic Grade II* listed Roundhouse building. Nine years on and the restored building is now used as office space and is home to a much-loved Italian restaurant.

Since 2021, the Roundhouse has also been a base for guided walks, kayak tours, boat trips and other activities. Whilst these have been well received, rising external costs mean this element of Roundhouse Birmingham is no longer providing the sustainable income we need to fund the ongoing care of this historic building. For this reason, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the leisure activity offer and visitor centre.

The office spaces will remain open as usual. Visitors can still access the site (see www.arenaltd.co.uk for opening hours) and Ristorante Caffe Arena will continue to welcome visitors.

We’re hugely proud of what the Roundhouse Birmingham team has achieved, and we’d also like to thank all of our visitors for their support. The trustees of Roundhouse Birmingham remain fully committed to caring for this important part of Birmingham’s heritage.

If you’ve already booked a tour, you’ll be contacted via email and the cost of your booking will be refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience.
