UPDATE: Please take the time to read our announcement. Ristorante Café Arena is open as normal.
A landscape image showing a canal that curves around to the left of the image. In the background of the image and down the canal are a few high rise apartment buildings. To the right of the canal is a towpath which curves around following the canal. On the towpath are a group of people walking away from the camera. There is an arched bridge down the canal route. All around the canal, path and image is greenery; green trees, green grass and green bushes.

Walking Ladywood’s History

Walking Ladywood’s History

Roundhouse Birmingham, with the help of funding from Birmingham City Council, are excited to be starting a local Ladywood Walking group this year, and we need you!

If you’re looking to get more active, then look no further. The aim of our walking group is to encourage an active lifestyle, reinforcing the importance of being and staying active, especially as we age. Anyone who is interested in getting involved is very welcome, but we’re particularly interested in hearing from those who are from or live in Ladywood and are aged 60+.

But why a walking group?

Walking is a free, low impact way of getting active and an easy way to incorporate regular exercise into our busy lives. Being regularly active can help with many things, including:

  • Improving heart, muscle and bone health.
  • Improving memory and brain function.
  • Reduces the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
  • Socialising and meeting new people.
  • Improving your confidence.
  • Improving your mood and managing stress.
  • Improving your mental health and managing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

That’s why we’re pleased be running a fortnightly walking group. Starting here from the Roundhouse, we’ll be heading out along the canals and around the streets of Ladywood to get our steps in to improve our health.

But there’s more! We’re keen for this to be a social experience and want to hear about the spaces and places in Ladywood that mean something to you. We hope to collaborate these into a new walking route that will be free for anyone to walk.

If you would like to get involved, you can register your interest by emailing walk@roundhousebirmingham.org.uk or why not come along to an information event to find out more. These drop-in sessions will be running 11:00 – 12:00 at the Roundhouse on the following dates:

  • Friday 17th May
  • Saturday 18th May
  • Wednesday 29th May

Please get in touch with us for more information.

Update

The ‘Roundhouse Birmingham’ charity was set up in 2016 to care for the historic Grade II* listed Roundhouse building. Nine years on and the restored building is now used as office space and is home to a much-loved Italian restaurant.

Since 2021, the Roundhouse has also been a base for guided walks, kayak tours, boat trips and other activities. Whilst these have been well received, rising external costs mean this element of Roundhouse Birmingham is no longer providing the sustainable income we need to fund the ongoing care of this historic building. For this reason, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the leisure activity offer and visitor centre.

The office spaces will remain open as usual. Visitors can still access the site (see www.arenaltd.co.uk for opening hours) and Ristorante Caffe Arena will continue to welcome visitors.

We’re hugely proud of what the Roundhouse Birmingham team has achieved, and we’d also like to thank all of our visitors for their support. The trustees of Roundhouse Birmingham remain fully committed to caring for this important part of Birmingham’s heritage.

If you’ve already booked a tour, you’ll be contacted via email and the cost of your booking will be refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience.
